My favorite is hardened block charcoal on watercolor paper. I love the feel and resistance and the ability to vary speed of movement considerably more than brush or pen. I don't use it as a final too…2 -

It is really a good thing that drawing italics takes so damn long. It keeps you away from the upright roman long enough to reflect "What the hell was I thinking?"4 -
